  • How We Help | NB Advocates

How We Help What to Expect When you reach out to our office for help, we will ask you some questions to help us better understand your situation. All of your information is private and confidential. After the initial reach out, one of our Individual Case Specialists will connect with you to help. Contact Us Do you have questions about your rights? Are you having problems accessing a government service or agency? Are you unsure where or how to get help? Types of Advocacy Sometimes when people call us for support, it's because they don’t know how to address a problem they are facing. They may not know their options, whom to talk to, or what steps to take. Individual Advocacy at our office falls into two categories. Quick Resolution Our staff will listen to the challenges and provide information and assistance to the person about their rights and options. This includes the services to which they are entitled to in New Brunswick. Many service requests can be resolved by providing information, support, and guidance to empower individuals to self-advocate, or other short-term interventions to address issues and barriers. Complex Advocacy Complex advocacy cases are those in which the identified issues involve multiple systems or where there is a lack of community or family resources to meet the needs of the individual. Complex advocacy cases may include follow-up with government officials, review of laws, policies, and standards of practice, mediation, case conferences, or formal recommendations from the Advocate. Trends in Individual Advocacy cases can lead to Systemic Advocacy. Read the Act The New Brunswick Advocate ensures that the rights of children, youth, vulnerable, and older adults are understood, protected, and promoted. We are independent of any department of the New Brunswick Government and operate under the guidance of the Child, Youth, and Senior Advocate Act. Recommendation Monitoring Recommendations are developed following individual case investigations and systemic reports to address complaints concerning service delivery and to advance the rights and interests of the population we advocate for. In April 2022, the Advocate introduced his recommendation monitoring process as a means of influencing government decisions. This process supports our mandate by providing the data required to report to the Legislative Assembly on how authorities are responding to our recommendations. If we notice trends in the advocacy cases we are receiving, we may open a Systemic Advocacy Case and conduct a Systemic Review . The goal of a Systemic Review is to make recommendations aimed at broad change in policy, practice, and legislation. Recommendations can be made to various authorities (such as Departments of Government, Regional Health Authorities, District Education Councils, long-term care facilities). Read our Systemic Reviews
